Islands from Pattaya: Koh Lan, Ko Samet or Ko Chang?
Compare three different island trips from Pattaya, their mainland connections and the practical costs to check.
Choose by the journey, not only the beach photograph
Koh Lan, Ko Samet and Ko Chang are not interchangeable excursions. Koh Lan connects with Pattaya’s Bali Hai pier; Ko Samet normally involves a mainland journey to Ban Phe; Ko Chang belongs to the Trat part of the coast. Check the exact island and arrival point before buying a ticket with a generic “island tour” title.
For a short holiday, fewer changes of hotel can leave more time at the beach. For a longer holiday, a mainland stop can be useful rather than wasted time. Think about luggage, children, walking ability and whether you want a single outing or a separate island stay.
Koh Lan: a possible day trip
A Pattaya base can work for a Koh Lan outing. Confirm which pier on the island your boat uses and how you will reach the beach you have selected. The boat arrival point and the beach are not automatically the same place.
Allow time for the return queue and the journey from Bali Hai to your room. A speedboat package and a ferry ticket are different products: compare group size, meeting point, stops, safety arrangements and cancellation conditions rather than the advertised crossing alone.
Ko Samet: plan the Ban Phe connection
Ban Phe is the mainland gateway to Ko Samet. Treat hotel pickup, road journey, boat check-in, crossing and the island transfer as separate parts of the trip. “One hour from Pattaya” is not a reliable door-to-door promise.
Ask which Ban Phe pier and island landing point are included. If arriving at a beach rather than a pier, ask how boarding works with luggage or reduced mobility. Confirm any separate park or access charges with the relevant authority or provider before comparing the total.
Ko Chang: give a longer extension room
For Ko Chang, plan a journey towards Trat and a ferry connection rather than assuming a quick Pattaya boat ride. Our suggestion is to treat it as a separate stay with breathing room for the journey. A connection that looks possible on paper may be unpleasant after a flight or an early checkout.
What every island quote should explain
Ask for a written itinerary with exact pickup and return points. Check the marine forecast, follow cancellation instructions and wear an appropriately fitting life jacket. Water clarity, calm conditions and a particular catch or wildlife sighting cannot be guaranteed.
- One-way or return transport, including every road leg.
- Departure and arrival pier names, not only the island name.
- Baggage, meals, equipment and entry charges included or excluded.
- Weather cancellation, refund and missed-connection conditions.
- A practical land-based alternative if the crossing does not run.
