Money in Pattaya: cash, cards, ATMs and exchange
Prepare everyday payments in Pattaya, compare exchange costs and check bank, card and cross-border QR conditions without assuming universal fees.
Carry a practical mix
Keep a modest daily cash amount and a separate backup payment method. Before departure, check overseas use and emergency card-freezing options with your own provider. Keep a record of what accommodation, transport and activities have already been paid; the money remaining in your wallet is not your complete travel budget.
Recognize the money you receive
The Bank of Thailand publishes information on circulating banknotes and their security features. Use its reference rather than an unfamiliar social-media image. Count cash and change before leaving the counter, and keep exchange receipts. A note that looks different may be a different series; ask a bank when unsure.
Make small payments easier
Keep coins and smaller notes accessible for modest purchases. Check the amount on the bill before handing over cash, and avoid offering a very large note when the seller says change is unavailable. Store small cash separately from your passport and main reserve.
Read the total withdrawal cost
An ATM charge, your card provider's charge and a currency-conversion rate are separate items. Read the screen before confirming and compare with your provider's terms. If a machine offers conversion into your home currency, inspect its quoted rate and cost rather than accepting automatically. No single fee applies to every card and machine.
Compare the amount you actually receive
For the same starting amount, ask how many baht remain after charges. Verify the currency, direction of exchange and any note-condition requirements. Avoid judging a booth only by a large advertised number. Use established authorized providers and retain the transaction receipt.
Cards and cross-border QR
Card acceptance does not mean every foreign card or app will work. The Bank of Thailand documents cross-border QR links, including Cambodia; availability depends on participating providers. Confirm your app and the merchant, check the recipient and amount, and keep a backup.
Ask before planning around an account
For an account or large transfer, request the bank's current document checklist and applicable terms. A friend's successful application does not prove your eligibility. This guide supplies questions for comparing services, not a recommendation to move funds or a promise that an account will be opened.
